![]() Let the above double as an impressions post, too. To be fair, both Lenna and Anodyne are pretty old indie games that would likely do things differently today, especially now that the market is oversaturated with actually great top down games.Įdit: I forgot The Hex is actually in the Racial Justice Bundle, hahah. In either approach, though, you need to have a good thing going from the start you can't just have a run-off-the-mill game and hope the player will stick around long enough for you to pull the rug under them. After being utterly obsessed with Inscryption, I gave The Hex a try and although it's (intentionally) ugly as sin, and each of its invidual mechanics are rather simple, it remains interesting because, in addition of throwing genre after genre at the player, it does the same with subversions from the start, keeping you hooked for long enough to keep going until the next one. It's interesting because the very author of Inscryption used to have a different approach that also works. That's why stuff like Undertale and Inscryption resonate so powerfully with people because they are actually good games even without the meta stuff. I do love when a game subverts your expectations, but it does work so much better when you were actually enjoying the game already. Postmodernism in games is a tricky thing that could make for its own thread / discussion topic. Probably between half an hour to an hour each. Plunge is a fantastic roguelite that's all about positioning and has a lot of depth and meat.Ĭlick to shrink.I didn't get terribly far because well, I wasn't having much fun. Bad Blood is a very unique versus anticipation game that's really worth a play. Although I guess for anyone reading this that hasn't played either of these, take it as glowing recommendation of all of the aforementioned. Perhaps to drive home how little time I myself spend trying these games, pretty much every game I have played, either I actually owned before the bundle, or is one of these mega-popular games, like Minit, Pyre, Celeste, Baba is You or Night in the Woods that hardly need any more feedback (or both, like Pikuniku, Oxenfree and Octodad). I've just realized two of my three "duds" could be described as "postmodern top-down Zelda-like" perhaps that's just a formula I can't get into. Lenna's Inception which I feel like I must be missing something because it didn't grab me at all. Anodyne, which probably falls more into the "well known" category, and I have been trying to get into for years and years, but always bounce off. Rising Dusk has an original gameplay concept (the level changes as you collect coins, which means you need to strategize when to pick them), which I feel landed somewhat unconfortably between puzzle resolution and pixel-perfect platforming (it doesn't have the immediacy of either because even if you think you have figured out the solution, you still need to land the execution to see if you're correct, and sometimes it wasn't obvious if my solution was wrong or the execution was). Plunge is a fantastic roguelite that's all about positioning and seems to have quite a lot of depth and meat. Bad Blood is a very unique versus game about anticipating and reading the opponent. ![]() One Night Stand, which I had played before, is a neat short story-based game with lovely hand-drawn art. ![]() Micro Mages, which was really fun (it's also apparently an actual NES game, made today, which is insanely impressive). Astrologaster which was a ton of fun, and notably it kept my wife's interest even though I had to translate all the copious dialogue for her. Although I guess for anyone reading this that hasn't played either of these, take it as glowing recommendation of all of the aforementioned.įrom the ones that aren't super known, I played and loved: Perhaps to drive home how little time I myself spend trying these games, pretty much every game I have played, either I actually owned before the bundle, or is one of these mega-popular games, like Minit, Pyre, Celeste, Baba is You or Night in the Woods that hardly need any more feedback (or both, like Pikuniku, Oxenfree).
